The initiative is a joint collaboration between the Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir and Bal Raksha Bharat. The project started in the year 2023 and is implemented across 8 districts of Jammu and Kashmir. The project focuses on reducing the prevalence of childhood pneumonia significantly below the national average, focusing on system strengthening by building the capacities of medical officers and para-medic staff; equip front-line workers like ASHA, ANM and AWW with the knowledge to identify children with pneumonia; improve community awareness-based knowledge and minimize the possible risks and factors contributing to the deadly disease of childhood pneumonia.

Jammu & Kashmir ranks among the top 5 states with a high prevalence of pneumonia, at 3.9%, compared to the national average of 2.8% (NFHS 2019-21), with higher rates in rural areas. Kupwara (8.6%), Anantnag (8.0%), and Rajouri (6.0%) are identified as pneumonia hotspots among India's top 15 districts. The lack of accessible, quality healthcare disproportionately affects disadvantaged children suffering from pneumonia and other common illnesses. The grant is utilized in Kashmir Division to implement targeted activities aimed at reducing cases, training frontline workers (doctors, ANMs, ASHAs) as per national guidelines (IAPPD, PPT, SAANS), and active case finding and management. The project is implemented across 8 districts in collaboration with the Directorate of Health, Kashmir.
